Jack's Free Pick Thursday: Clemson +7

The Clemson Tigers are capable of beating anyone in the country.  They have road wins over Alabama and North Carolina this season and should have beaten Duke in a 1-point loss with a weak foul call by the refs just before buzzer handed the Blue Devils the win.

The Tigers are showing what they are capable of in the NCAA Tournament.  New Mexico was a popular pick to make a run, and the Tigers mopped the floor with the Lobos in a 77-56 win as 2-point dogs.  They controlled the game basically the entire way against Baylor in a 72-64 win as 4.5-point dogs.  They can hang with Arizona.

The Wildcats have had a much easier path to the Sweet 16 beating Long Beach State 85-65 as 20-point favorites and Dayton 78-68 as 8.5-point favorites.  But they lost to USC 78-65 in the regular season finale, and then lost 67-58 to Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament.  Oregon went zone and completely threw them off.

Clemson is great at protecting the rim, and they have gone zone at times with a lot of success.  I suspect the Tigers will go zone, and it will be up to Arizona to make shots over the top.  The Wildcats have struggled in this department, and Caleb Love is known for shooting them out of games.  

I think Clemson's versatility offensively will give the Wildcats trouble as well.  Both big men PJ Hall and Schieffelin can shoot it from outside, Chase Hunter has been one of the best guards in the tournament, and Joseph Girard is a 41.4% 3-pointer shooter.  Arizona big man Oumar Ballo will have to try and defend on the perimeter in this one, which isn't his game.
